How to remove EXIF and location data from a photo on a Mac

Apple documents location removal in the Photos app and GPS viewing in Preview. This guide shows both, and is straight about what Apple's steps do not cover.

Drop photos here

JPG, PNG, WebP. Free: up to 5 photos at a time. Hexloom Pro: unlimited, whole folders, zip.

Quick answer

In the Photos app, select the photos and choose Image > Location > Hide Location. To export copies without location, choose Photos > Settings, click General, untick Include location information, then use File > Export. These steps are about location. Apple does not say they remove camera or date fields, so check the result.

Steps: Photos app

Hide location on photos in your library

  1. Open Photos and select the photos you want to change.
  2. Choose Image > Location, then Hide Location.

The same menu offers Revert to Original Location, so this can be undone inside Photos.

Export without location information

  1. Choose Photos > Settings and click General.
  2. Untick Include location information. Apple describes it as including the location embedded in photos taken by a GPS-enabled camera, including iPhone, when you share or export them.
  3. Select the photos and choose File > Export.
  4. In the dialog, pick a Photo Kind (JPEG, HEIC, TIFF or PNG) and click Export.

Use the ordinary export, not Export Unmodified Original. Apple describes that one as exporting photos in their original format and does not say whether the location setting applies to it.

Steps: Preview

  1. Open the photo in Preview.
  2. Choose Tools > Show Location Info.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the GPS section to see the location. Click Show in Maps for a street map.

Apple's Preview guide covers viewing location, not removing it. Third-party guides describe a Remove Location Info button in the GPS pane of the inspector, but we could not confirm that button in Apple's documentation, and menu wording may differ between macOS versions. If you use it, save the file and verify it with the tool below.

What this does not remove, and known limits

Check the result

Drop the exported file into the tool above. It runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded. It shows a before and after list of what the file held, cuts GPS, camera make and model, serial numbers, date and time, owner and software tags, thumbnail, XMP, IPTC and comments out of JPG, PNG and WebP files without re-encoding, and then re-reads the cleaned file to prove what is left. It keeps the ICC colour profile and a bare rotation flag on JPEGs. HEIC is re-saved as JPEG only if the browser can open it (Safari can); otherwise convert it first.
