Quick answer
On a Samsung phone, open the photo in Gallery, tap More options, tap Details, tap Edit, then tap the red minus sign next to the location. Or tick Remove Location data when you share. For future photos, turn off the camera's location setting. Google Photos is different: it only removes locations it estimated or that you added by hand, not ones your camera wrote into the photo.
Steps: Samsung Gallery
Share without location
- Open the Gallery app.
- Long press a photo to select it, then tap any other photos you want to send.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tick Remove Location data.
- Choose an app to share with.
Samsung's page for this was written for New Zealand variants on One UI 3.0 or higher, and says other regions may differ.
Remove location from the photo itself
- Select the photo in Gallery.
- Tap More options (the three vertical dots), then Details.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the red minus sign next to the location information, then tap Save.
Steps: Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and open the photo.
- Tap More, then Edit.
- Tap Remove location.
Google is explicit about the limit: you can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location was automatically added by your camera, you cannot edit or remove it in Google Photos. For that case, use the Samsung steps above if you have a Samsung phone, or the tool below.
Stop future photos carrying location
Open your camera's settings and turn the location option off. Google's help page lists the name by maker:
- Google: Save location
- Samsung: Location tags
- Motorola: Save location
- OnePlus: Store location data
- Xiaomi: Save location info
Other makers use their own wording. Google notes that photos without location information may not show in Google Photos' map view, in location searches, or in Memories created from your trips.
What this does not remove
- Samsung's instructions only mention location. They do not say camera model or date and time are removed.
- Google says new albums, links and conversations you share from Google Photos do not include location details by default. That covers sharing inside Google Photos; it says nothing about a file you send through another app.
- Samsung says that on the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, turning on Auto Blocker's Maximum restrictions removes location from images shared in the Messages app. Other models and apps may behave differently.
- Anything visible in the picture. Google itself warns people may guess a place from landmarks in a photo.
- Photos already sent, and whatever a platform stores after upload.
Check the result
Drop the photo into the tool above. It runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded. It cuts the metadata out of JPG, PNG and WebP files without re-encoding, shows a before and after list of what the file held, and re-reads the cleaned file to prove what is left.
