Hexloom Chat Archive by Hexloom Labs

Export ChatGPT chats to Markdown

Hexloom Chat Archive is a browser extension that turns the ChatGPT conversation open in your tab into a clean Markdown file, with Obsidian-ready frontmatter. The file is built in your browser; nothing is sent to us.

Chrome and Edge 137 or later. A Firefox version is in review. Works on chatgpt.com, plus the other two assistants. Not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic or Google; written with AI assistance.

How to export a ChatGPT chat

  1. Install the extension and open the ChatGPT conversation you want to keep.
  2. Click the Chat Archive icon and choose Markdown or JSON.
  3. Open the saved file. It has the title and date in YAML frontmatter, each message under a role heading, and code blocks kept as fenced code. Drop it in an Obsidian vault or any notes folder.

What ChatGPT already gives you

ChatGPT has its own export under Settings, Data controls, Export data. OpenAI emails you a zip with your whole history as JSON and HTML. It is complete, but it is not Markdown, it arrives by email some time later, and you have to convert it yourself. An extension is quicker when you want one chat as a note right now.

Menu names reflect the services at the time of writing and may change.

Free and Pro

Free: export the open chat as Markdown or JSON, one at a time, on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

Pro ($29 a year or $4 a month): Bulk archive of your whole ChatGPT history, with each chat written as a Markdown file into a folder you pick, and local search across saved chats. Bulk archive opens your chats one by one in your own session, so it may go against OpenAI's terms; use it at your own risk.

Privacy

The extension has no analytics and no server. Saved chats live in your browser's own storage and in the folder you choose. Your Pro licence key is checked offline. See the privacy policy.

Questions

Is it free to export ChatGPT chats?

Yes. Exporting the open chat as Markdown or JSON is free with no daily cap. Pro ($29 a year or $4 a month) adds the archive features listed above.

Does my conversation get uploaded?

No. The extension reads the page you have open and writes the file in your browser. It makes no network requests of its own, which you can confirm in your browser's network tab.

Does it work with images, files or PDF?

No. Images are linked rather than embedded, attachments are not saved, and there is no PDF or Word output.

Is it tested on a logged-in account?

It was tested against recorded page layouts of ChatGPT, not yet against many live accounts. If ChatGPT changes its page, export can break until we ship a fix. Pro has a 14-day refund by email.
